Our rock chalk, which we source from our own quarry at Butser, Petersfield, is ideal for use in the construction industry due to its strength, versatility and cost-effectiveness.
Butser rock chalk is akin to limestone rather than standard chalk, meaning it’s a very strong and hard wearing material. It’s the strongest naturally-occuring material in Hampshire which was one of the reasons TJ purchased the quarry in 2017.
Recent trials have proved that under laboratory conditions, the material would give a CBR value greater than 15% on the final surface.
The chalk is utilised in several forms but for construction purposes, it’s conformed to Specification for Highways Class 1A fill.
This processed chalk is well-suited to construction projects as a primary general fill aggregate. It’s most commonly used for capping and backfill, and can be laid over terram as a deep fill material and to level natural ground ready for the next layers of construction.
This is TJ’s most popular chalk product as it offers great value for money because it is locally sourced versus alternatives such as limestone, granite and basalt which would have to be quarried from the Mendips and Midlands and transported to the South, which leads to inflated cost.
In recent years the demand for bulk recycled fill materials has outweighed supply. Our rock chalk is a perfectly suitable alternative and is offered at a similar cost. Medium and long-term supply is not an issue and can fill the void left due to the lack of availability of locally recycled aggregates or the additional expense of importing limestone from the Mendips.
Our chalk has been used for a range of large-scale projects in recent years. One project saw us supplying rock chalk to a new local residential housing scheme. The client was particularly happy to receive the chalk due to the lack of available recycled aggregate, which was having a cost impact as well as causing delays.
Earlier in the year, we supplied chalk to a large commercial development at Adanac Park, Nursling, for a piling mat, which was being used to dig deep foundations. The piling mat had 150mm of chalk, capped off with 150mm of crushed concrete.
Not only do we offer a superb product that can be used for groundwork, engineering and construction projects, we also offer a great all-round service to go with it. We can:
The team at Butser are able to process and deliver as much as 1,500 tonnes of chalk in a single day!
