Meet Rob Elloway, Tipper Driver

Rob has worked for TJ for eight years and enjoys the variety that life as a driver offers him. Outside of work he enjoys fishing with his son and daughter, and spending time with his grandson.

What does your role involve?

As a tipper driver, I transport material from one site to another on a daily basis. This could be conducting muck away services or delivering a range of aggregates and screed. I come in each day to a different route and I work through the list of jobs until they are all complete, ensuring that our customers are happy with my service at every point.

What’s your career background?

I was a fire protection engineer for 27 years: I started at the bottom as a labourer and worked my way up to a supervisor in charge of numerous work colleagues on high value projects. The job involved fitting fire sprinklers in commercial buildings such as supermarkets, hotels, etc. The job was quite physically demanding and I needed a change, so I left in 2014 and joined TJ Transport as a tipper driver

Can you talk us through a typical work day for you?

At the end of each day, someone from the office walks me through my workload for the next day. This is my opportunity to ask any questions about site times or access requirements that I may need to be aware of. Typically, my day starts at 06.00 and finishes at around 16.30/17.00. The days can be long but that’s why you need to enjoy the work and the people you work with, which I do!

Equally, the days can be shorter if my workload is lighter or the day goes particularly smoothly, so it really does vary. My day is spent working through the list of jobs on the list until they are all complete – all collections and deliveries done and happy customers all round is the aim!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety of work – no two days are ever the same! I also enjoy being on my own – you can’t beat your own company. I often receive positive feedback from sites and it’s nice to know the effort I put in to make customers happy is appreciated because despite how we are often stereotyped, we are not all mindless drivers! I really do give a lot of consideration to the customer experience, and I take pride in keeping my truck clean and completing my work to a high standard.

Are there any challenges that you’ve had to overcome?

The weather is a big challenge! The summer is nice and dry but gets dusty and in the winter it’s typically very wet and visibility is poorer. Access to sites is something I contend with on a daily basis. Different challenges arise every day, but you just crack on and do what you need to do to get the job done.

Why is TJ a good company to work for?

The support from the office is always there – I’ve found that if I ever have an issue or problem with anything during the day, the office staff are always there to help out or advise me on the best course of action. The role suits me, the vehicles are in good condition and always kept to a high standard with servicing etc, which is great. The people I work with are pleasant and helpful – this includes both the office and drivers.
