Working with subcontract hauliers to provide an exceptional service

TJ Transport uses a fleet of skilled and reliable subcontract hauliers, allowing us to provide the flexible and versatile service that our clients have come to expect.

We have our own fleet of around 50 vehicles, which we utilise daily to fulfil our workload. This fleet comprises articulated lorries, tipper lorries, grab lorries and a range of different trailers.

To complement our own fleet, we have, over the years, been growing our subcontractor haulier fleet so that we can call upon those companies and drivers as and when we need to. This additional resource enables us to meet our customers’ needs whatever they may be.

The haulage business can be seasonal with different levels of work at different times of the year. Our contracts and commitments mean that our own drivers’ workloads remain steady all year round, but that during busy times, we have these subcontract hauliers to draft in for assistance.

We have a large pool of haulage companies that we partner with, which is in excess of 50 small and large organisations, from one-man bands to multiple-location businesses. We call upon these companies as and when we need to, to fulfil our workload.

These hauliers work as hard as our own workforce and carry out the same tasks. The companies are based all over the UK, which enables us to meet the requirements of all of our customers, wherever they’re located.

On the average day, we utilise around 40 tippers in addition to our own trucks. We confirm these vehicles the day before they’re needed and send their work lists to them so that they can see what they’ll be doing the next day and can plan ahead. If any ad-hoc work comes in which means that we need to utilise further hauliers, we call around to see who has capacity to take on additional work and then assign the work accordingly.

TJ Transport Third Party Haulage Planner, Abbie Spratt, said: “It’s my job to manage and maintain relations with the network of third party hauliers that work for us. This involves building up good working relationships with both the drivers and the companies, making sure they’re happy with the work they’re getting and what they’re being paid.

“It’s really important to keep both sides happy so that everything continues ticking along nicely. I always endeavour to match drivers with the types of jobs that they prefer to keep them happy in what they’re doing and maintain a good rapport. I’ve spent a lot of time getting to know the individual drivers as well as the staff in the company offices. Communication is key!”

A few words from our third party hauliers…

“TJ provides regular work and reasonable rates. In the current climate, guaranteed work is hard to come by, so it’s great that TJ can get some of our fleet out daily. Plus, they’re always on hand to help our drivers if any issues arise.”
Kev of TMR South Coast Group

“TJ are reliable; they work for the big companies so the jobs are always there and the team is always helpful. I get on well with the staff, they all make me feel welcome and if I’m ever stuck, they always try to help. They communicate regularly and everything is very straight-forward when working for TJ. All the jobs are on their Fissara app, so if anything changes on the day, my drivers just need to press refresh and off they go.”
Stuart of Sibley Group

“TJ is a great company to work for as firstly, their rates are fair; with the price of fuel going up so dramatically recently, they’ve increased their rates which helps tackle the strain of rising running costs. Secondly, everything is well-structured; you’re sent your work for the next day at the end of the current working day. The routing is always structured to encompass backloads wherever possible, minimising running empty.

“Even the team’s attitudes are great; every person in the office – whether that be Maisy, Abbie, Sam or anyone else – is always positive and will resolve any problems you bring to them. I know that whenever an issue arises, no matter when it is during the working day, all I need to do is give them a call and it’ll be dealt with promptly.”
Saf of Roman Fleet
