We’re working in partnership with Test Valley Golf Club on a three-phrase project that includes the creation of a new driving range, safety banking, a new feature hole and improvements to the 14th hole.
We were appointed as the principal contractor, working in partnership with the Test Valley Golf Club management team. Our TJ on-site team consists of three staff members, all of which have worked on other local golf club projects, bringing with them a wealth of experience.
Marc Westenborg of Westenborg Golf Design created the importation design for these project updates, providing us with guidance on how the new areas should look after we have imported and shaped the soil.
Phase 1 commenced in April 2024 and was completed by November 2025. This part of the project involved the building of a driving range in the middle of an already established golf course. This required a new road to be built through the site in order to cope with the HGV requirement. The old driving range area was developed into the new first hole, with the original first hole becoming the footprint of the new driving range.
The development of the new first hole involved shaping mounds either side of the fairway, joining it up with the original first green. To do this we organised soil imports and undertook the construction of a new tee complex. New banking was then built and shaped around the perimeter of the new range, including the creation of contours in line with the architect’s design, as well as a new tee complex on the 10th hole.
Phase two started in December 2025 and is ongoing. This phase involves creating safety banking alongside the 3rd and 7th holes to fit in with the existing feel of the course. We are also doing further work to the new feature hole (the 8th hole), which includes building a new tee box, a small lake build and banking, contours and shaping of new mounds on either side of the hole.
Phase 3 will involve stripping an area of vegetation alongside the 14th hole, then constructing mounding in the area to improve it. Work is due to commence in Spring 2027, subject to a number of planning items and infrastructure works that need to be completed prior.
The services we provided for this project were extensive and included everything from soil importation and groundworks, to aggregate supply for drainage and road building. Many of the supplied aggregates came from our Butser Quarry near Petersfield and amounted to a few hundred tonnes. We utilised a range of plant during the project including bulldozers, a 360 excavator, tipper lorries and a road sweeper to keep the roads surrounding the site clean and tidy.
Operations Director Neil Glazebrook has overseen the project from the outset. He said: “The project has been complex at times; striking the balance between construction and keeping all golf holes available to the members was challenging, as was some adverse weather early in the project. Despite that the project has been successful with TJT producing (in partnership with Test Valley Management) a great enhancement of the course.”
Located in the Hampshire countryside near Overton, Test Valley Golf Club features an 18-hole, par-72 downland course. Designed in 1991 by Don Wright alongside European Tour veteran Eamonn Darcy, the club opened in 1992.
Test Valley offers playable, high-quality greens year-round, accommodating all skill levels. Facilities include a driving range, pro shop and welcoming clubhouse.
