TJ wins contract to assist with A27 resurfacing project

TJ was awarded a contract to move 10,000 tonnes of road planings as part of a major project to resurface a section of the A27 between Chichester and Emsworth.

The first phase of the project, which was to resurface the Eastbound carriageway, took place in November and December and saw us removing around 5,000 tonnes of road planings over the four-week period.

The project was undertaken at night between 8pm and 5am so as not to disturb the traffic flow at peak times. This type of nightwork is great as it not only allows work to be done during off-peak times, but it also enables us to utilise our fleet 24 hours a day too.

This project is being undertaken by West Sussex County Council, who brought in Tarmac and Sims Milling Services to manage the day to day operations. We already work in close partnership with Tarmac, but on this occasion, we were employed by Sims to remove the road planings from the site.

We supplied and manned an average of seven lorries per night, moving between 200 and 240 tonnes of planings. These planings were taken to our Butser Quarry, where they have been utilised in the production of our own recycled aggregate, iBlend.

Our commitment to producing recycled aggregates comes from our dedication to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill. This helps in this mission and is just one of the ways in which we are doing our bit for the environment. What’s more, iBlend is a great aggregate in its own right!

iBlend is a Type 1 crushed primary/recycled blended aggregate. It is ideal for use in ground engineering projects such as sub base layers for roads, hard standings and access areas. It is a much more cost effective alternative to primary sub base materials, which are not only more expensive, but also harder to get hold of as the nearest crushed rock sources are in the Mendips.

TJ’s South East Depot & Haulage Contract Manager, Dan Shortt said: “We’ve done small jobs for Sims Milling in the past but this is the first major contract we’ve been awarded and  we’re thrilled to be part of it. This is a good opportunity for us to build our relationship with the client and show them what we’re capable of.

“It’s a big deal with a large tonnage and the fact that it’s night work is great too as it allows us to utilise our fleet around the clock. Our ability to repurpose the unwanted materials, diverting them from landfill and using them to produce our in-house recycled aggregates is an additional bonus for us.”

The second phase of the work to resurface the Westbound carriageway is due to commence in May and will see us return to carry out the same tasks as those undertaken in phase one.

We have expanded our operations in recent years, opening a south east depot at Shoreham in the summer of 2021 to enable us to build closer working relationships with clients in the Sussex area and beyond.

One such client is Tarmac, with whom we secured a five-year, multi-million pound contract in 2020. This contract  involves hauling aggregates and asphalt in the central south coast area on behalf of Tarmac, who are the UK’s largest supplier of construction materials. TJ is responsible for all of Tarmac’s haulage work in the areas between Brighton and Bournemouth, which equates to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of aggregates per annum.
