Paul Smith, Commercial & Development Manager

Intro:

I moved to the New Forest, where I spent all my School & College years attending Brockenhurst College and then onto a part time Higher National Diploma in Business studies at Bournemouth University.

This was particularly challenging for 4 years as I was working full time for Foster Yeoman Ltd, a large family-owned UK & European based Quarrying and Heavy Building Material supplier. The company was sold in 2007 to Aggregate Industries, a British based wholly owned subsidiary of Lafarge Holcim and aligned with the large multi-national silo businesses.
Having spent just short of 20 years working in various Commercial, operations and Project Manager’s roles from Kent to Gloucester including all the area’s within, I was offered the opportunity to work for the TJ Group of Companies – where I have worked since April 2018, firstly during the site Development days of the Bristol Regional Operation in Avonmouth, established in 2016 and more recently based at Charity Farm Head Office in Fareham, Hampshire.

I have achieved a range of professional qualifications since joining the TJ Group across a variety of wide subjects from Sales, Marketing and Project Management to Health Safety behaviour.

  • Institute of Sales and Marketing (ISMM) – Level 5
  • WAMITAB – Level 4, Treatment & Transfer of Non – Hazardous Waste
  • WAMITAB – Level 4, Treatment & Transfer of Hazardous Waste
  • IOSH – Managing Safely
  • Project Management Professional Training – PMP
  • HazWaste Online Academy; Hazardous Waste Classification & Advanced Waste

Paul’s Bio:

job title:

My Job role at the TJ Group is Commercial and Business Development Manager, this covers as wide range of area’s focussing on day-to-day commercial activity as well as future projects and development opportunity.

Favourite part of job role:

My favourite part of the job is interacting with Key Clients, understanding their needs and developing a client / Supplier partnership legacy where Business relationships go from strength to strength. I also enjoy spending time at our 2 Mineral extraction, material recycling and land recovery sites, ensuring product quality and specifications are aligned with Client’s expectations and needs. My strengths are my experience in Quarry Development and Project Management which helps me understand the varying and unpredictable behaviour of mineral & recycled materials and the complex challenges posed on the production process, all vital prior to a clear route to market.

LENGTH OF SERVICE:

I joined the group in April 2018 from Aggregate Industries UK ltd after 25 years’ service within the Quarrying and Waste Management industry.

OUTSIDE OF WORK:

Outside of work I enjoy staying fit and healthy. I go running several times per week and recently completed my 6th London Marathon in October 2021 after 2 postponements due to the pandemic, I’m also lucky to live on the beach in Dorset and have recently taken up all year-round open water swimming, a pulsating experience especially during the colder months!

I am also a keen & established winter sports fanatic and am fixated on numerous skip trips during the winter season in the Alps, unfortunately due to the pandemic my favourite hobby has been on hold but will return in during winter 2022.
