Aggregate supplier for major M27 upgrade project

TJ Transport has supplied the aggregates for the M27 J10 project, which has been ongoing for the past two years. Managed by engineering contractor, Volker Fitzpatrick, the project consisted of realigning the sliproads at J10 to improve traffic flow around the Welbourne Garden Village Development.

Planning agreements stated that the Welborne Garden Village could not occupy more than 1,160 homes until J10 was converted into an “all-moves” junction that could serve the area effectively.

The project involved adding in an exit slip road on the eastbound carriageway, enabling road users to exit the M27 at J10, which was not possible before. Prior to these changes, drivers had to go on to J11 and return to J10 on the westbound carriageway to exit.

The junction development work was undertaken by Hampshire County Council (HCC) in partnership with National Highways and Welbourne developer Buckland Development Ltd.

Volker Fitzpatrick was brought in by HCC to manage the works. They, in turn, employed TJ Transport as the primary aggregate supplier, which entailed us supplying over 140,000 tonnes of materials over the two-year period.

We transported the required materials to our headquarters in Wickham – just a mile down the road from Welbourne – and stockpiled the aggregates there for easy access. We then transferred the required materials to the J10 site as and when needed; this work was undertaken around the clock to meet client needs.

We supplied both 6f5 Crushed Concrete and Type 1 iBlend. These two materials are recycled aggregates produced in-house at TJ’s Butser Quarry by crushing and screening clean, inert construction and demolition waste such as concrete, brick and rock.

Our 6f5 Crushed Concrete is an ‘as crushed’ product that is most commonly used for capping, to raise and level natural ground ready for a Type 1 sub base layer. It is a highly cost-effective and sustainable alternative to primary quarried limestone for ground engineering. It is compliant with strict industry specifications, including 6E, 6R, 6F3, 6I, and 6J.

Our Type 1 iBlend is a premium secondary aggregate, serving as a highly cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to primary quarried materials like Limestone Type 1. It is crushed to a specified grading from 40mm down to dust. The blend of various particle sizes ensures that when compacted, the finer materials fill the voids between the larger stones, creating an exceptionally tight, stable and rigid surface.

Both aggregates are processed at our advanced south coast recycling facilities to ensure strict quality control and minimal environmental impact, helping projects meet sustainability targets by diverting materials away from landfill.

In addition to aggregate supply, we also provided a muck away service for this project, removing over 50m3 of soil from the site. We repurposed this soil for other projects, including an ongoing one at Stoneham Golf Club, promoting sustainability and diverting further waste from landfill.

TJ Transport’s Commercial Director, Steve Grant, oversaw the J10 project from start to finish. He said: “We were pleased to partner with Volker to deliver the aggregates they needed for the duration of the project and it all went smoothly throughout. Our HQ location was perfect for ensuring swift, responsive deliveries as and when they were needed. Our in-house recycled aggregates were ideal for the job, whilst also providing cost and sustainability benefits to the customer as well.”
