We’re pleased to share the details of a project we completed for Basingstoke Golf Club recently, which involved the building of a brand-new driving range as part of a multi-million pound site redevelopment.
The project spanned 22 months, with TJ responsible for vehicle movements, soil inputs and groundworks / development of the driving range out field. Other contractors were responsible for the development of car parks and a brand-new club house build.
We started by carrying out extensive infill and land raising works, before shaping the area as required. We worked closely with other civil engineering / groundworks companies who brought building and drainage expertise to the project.
We had a consistent team of four staff on site daily, the management team coordinating and overseeing the work, and our team of drivers delivering materials as and when needed.
The working area was split into three sections – working from the furthest point of what would be the driving range, back towards where the new driving range building would finally stand. This required working in partnership with other building contractors who were tasked with building car parks and laying the foundations of the new buildings.
TJ supplied a range of aggregates from Butser Quarry, which were used to build and maintain the temporary on-site road, which was mainly utilised for the delivery of soils throughout the project. We also sourced and supplied several hundred tonnes of drainage materials during the contract.
We utilised bulldozers, 360 excavators and dumpers throughout the project, as well as a sweeper to ensure the highway was kept clean. Les Searle Earthmoving Ltd supported towards the end of the project, supplying additional plant for the final shaping of the site.
Basingstoke Golf Club was established in 1907 and had a couple of homes until 2021, when the Club purchased the 162-acre site at Dummer Golf Club. Since then, Basingstoke Golf Club has transformed to create one of the best clubs and courses in the South of England. The fabulous reimagined downland layout engages and challenges every level of golfer and sits alongside the stunning new state-of-the-art clubhouse and driving range.
They acquired the services of Course Architect, Bruce Weller of Weller Designs to help them realise their vision of the redesign and construction of a fabulous new and modern course. Their aim was to build one of the finest courses in Hampshire while keeping its members at the heart of the Club. With creeping bent greens (the first in Hampshire), rubber crumb bunkers, two new lagoons and a state-of-the-art irrigation system, the consensus is that their vision has been achieved.
TJ Transport Operations Director, Neil Glazebrook, oversaw the project. He said: “The project was a success overall, with a high-end solution achieved. Great relationships with the golf course management helped, along with very strong project communications throughout. The main section of the infill process was challenging for all as the UK was hit by some extremely heavy rainfall during that part of the project. This resulted in very challenging working areas, wet material and delays caused by flooding. But we carried on and got the project finished to an extremely high standard.”
