TJ hauls 20,000 tonnes of shingle as part of beach replenish scheme

TJ Transport has hauled 20,000 tonnes of beach shingle from Brighton Beach to neighbouring Shoreham Beach as part of the beach replenish scheme.

Wave movement shifts sand and shingle east from Shoreham Port towards Brighton Marina, a process known as ‘longshore drift’. Brighton and Hove City Council move vast amounts of shingle each year to combat this and to protect and maintain the coastline.

The project is being managed by JT Mackley & Co Ltd, a civil engineering company who are dedicated to protecting coastal communities from the fear of flooding.

JT Mackley brought TJ in to assist with hauling the shingle from Brighton to Shoreham. Utilising our fleet of tipper lorries, we moved up to 2,000 tonnes of shingle per day for 12 days to get the job done. This equated to around 100 lorry loads per day and we had around 10 vehicles going back and forth to complete the collections and drop offs.

There were four different depositing sites along Shoreham beach; we distributed the shingle evenly amongst them each day to ensure JT Mackley’s project team had good access to the shingle at all times, ensuring there was no disruption to their work.

Since we opened our new depot in Shoreham last summer, we are more often called upon for these types of jobs in the Sussex area.

We have undertaken these types of projects on other parts of the south coast in the past. For example, we move 7,000 tonnes of shingle for Littlehampton Harbour Board twice a year.

TJ’s South East Depot & Haulage Contract Manager, Dan Shortt said: “Everything went to plan and the day to day operations went smoothly and remained problem-free from start to finish. We worked with JT Mackley’s site team really well and this ensured that the project remained on schedule, which is the ultimate aim.”

In addition to haulage services, we also offer muck away, grab hire and aggregate supply, so please get in touch more info or get an instant quote online today.
