Project commences at Basingstoke Golf Club

TJ Transport’s golf course construction team has spent the summer readying the site at Basingstoke Golf Club so that improvement works can commence in September.

TJ was awarded the contract to upgrade and improve the driving range at the club last year, and they will soon start the work to enhance the driving range by raising levels for drainage and landscape purposes.

The team has spent a number of weeks over the summer preparing the site ready for the work; this involved creating a compound for the plant and materials to be stored, installing site infrastructure and building temporary roads in and out of the construction area.

The Club, which was formerly known as Dummer Golf Club, was originally founded as a 9-hole course in 1907. During WW1 the land was used as a training airfield and play never resumed there. Kempshott Park was the chosen land for the new course after the war and James Braid was commissioned to design and construct the course.

The current 18-hole course was completed in 1928 and provides a challenging yet fair experience for golfers of all abilities. The course is presented to a high standard throughout the year for both members and visitors to enjoy.

In June 2021 the Club moved to its new home in Dummer village. With a large investment plan in place to improve all parts of the course, the Club will soon offer one of the most attractive courses in the area.

We have been employed to construct a new driving range, which will involve importing many thousands of tonnes of clean soil to the site to build this new facility. We will work closely with the club and golf course architect Weller Golf Designs Ltd to remodel the driving range in line with the plans.

In addition to the new driving range, a number of other contractors have been instructed to carry out other works to the course including improvements to the holes, surrounds and even a new Clubhouse, which will result in an enhanced all-round experience for golf club members.

TJ has built up a great deal of expertise in golf club improvement projects such as this in recent years, with successful projects being carried out at Stoneham Golf Club, Littlehampton Golf Club and Skylark Golf & Country Club. The same operational team will work on this project, bringing with them their extensive knowledge and experience to ensure a complete and thorough job is delivered.

The materials being used for this project will come from carefully selected regional construction sites where the clean inert material could otherwise be going to landfill. It will instead be tested, approved and reused on this project under CL:AIRE protocol. This will be used to carry out the infill, screening and shaping work required.

TJ Transport’s Commercial Director, Steve Grant said: “We’re excited to be getting started on this project, which will make a huge difference to club members, especially those utilising the driving range to improve and hone their skills. We’re highly experienced in golf course construction and it’s something we’re becoming known for in the Hampshire region and beyond. We look forward to getting started on this project and to working with the team at Basingstoke to ensure every aspect of the project runs smoothly.”
