Working with Cemex to provide essential services to HS2

TJ has been successfully working in partnership with Cemex for the past 10 months, delivering haulage services on their behalf for the HS2 project.

Since commencing the work in September 2021, TJ has had a number of lorries stationed at Langley Quarry, near Heathrow, from where they are carrying out haulage services for Cemex Monday-Friday.

The lorries are kept up at Langley routinely, with TJ’s drivers travelling up together every Monday and returning on Fridays. This allows us to increase efficiency for both ourselves and Cemex, keeping costs down by not driving the lorries back and forth to the south coast, and cutting down on unnecessary mileage and omissions.

This contract is a five-year deal between ourselves and Cemex to supply between 3 and 6 tipping artic lorries a day, running circa 1250-1500 tonnes of sand and graded stone per week to three different sites along the HS2 network.

The three sites are all located in the Aylesbury area, which is around 30 miles from the Langley Quarry base.

HS2 is a state-of-the-art high speed rail network that will connect London to the midlands, the north and Scotland. It is expected to have a significant impact on the UK’s low carbon transport future and will provide much-needed rail capacity across the country.

We were approved by DHL freight logistics as a designated service provider for HS2 last spring. DHL manages the day-to-day logistics of the project with responsibility for securing and liaising with transport contractors that will be brought in to assist with the works, which will be ongoing for the next two decades.

To secure this approval, we had to undergo a stringent and extensive audit to ensure suitability, which we passed, allowing us to be utilised as an official haulier, permitted to carry out work for the HS2 project as and when needed.

TJ’s South East Depot & Haulage Contract Manager, Dan Shortt said: “The contract is going really well. We’ve worked with Cemex for over 15 years, providing them with various services on a number of different contracts both on the south coast and further afield. Our team is working well with theirs, assisting them in providing additional services to their customers. It has been challenging at times, but we’ve worked as a team to deliver a high quality service regardless and it’s all run fairly smoothly to date.”
