TJ awarded groundworks project at Basingstoke Golf Club

TJ has been awarded a contract to upgrade and improve the driving range at Basingstoke Golf Club. The work is due to commence autumn/winter 2022 and is expected to take around a year to complete.

The Club, which was formerly known as Dummer Golf Club, was originally founded as a 9-hole course in 1907. During WW1 the land was used as a training airfield and play never resumed there. Kempshott Park was the chosen land for the new course after the war and James Braid was commissioned to design and construct the course.

The current 18-hole course was completed in 1928 and provides a challenging yet fair experience for golfers of all abilities. The course is presented to a high standard throughout the year for both members and visitors to enjoy.

In June 2021 the Club moved to its new home in Dummer village. With a large investment plan in place to improve all parts of the course, the Club will soon offer one of the most attractive courses in the area.

TJ has been employed to construct a new driving range, which will involve us importing many thousands of tonnes of clean soil to the site to build this new facility. We will work closely with the club and golf course architect Weller Golf Designs Ltd to remodel the driving range in line with the plans.

In addition to the new driving range, a number of other contractors have been instructed to carry out other works to the course including improvements to the holes, surrounds and even a new Clubhouse.

TJ has built up a great deal of expertise in golf club improvement projects such as this in recent years, with successful projects being carried out at Stoneham Golf Club and Littlehampton Golf Club. The same operational team will work on this project, bringing with them their extensive knowledge and experience to ensure a complete and thorough job is delivered.

The materials being used for this project will come from carefully selected regional construction sites where the clean inert material could otherwise be going to landfill. It will instead be tested, approved and reused on this project under CL:AIRE protocol. This will be used to carry out the infill,  screening and shaping work required.

TJ Transport’s Commercial Director, Steve Grant said: “It’s great to be selected to undertake this work in a market where the competition is extremely high. We’ve demonstrated our expertise in golf course construction on numerous occasions in recent years and it’s something we’re becoming known for in the Hampshire area and beyond. We look forward to working with the team at Basingstoke to ensure the smooth running of the project from start to finish.”
