TJ assists in final phase of M27 smart motorway project

TJ Transport provided haulage services to assist in the final phase of the M27 smart motorway project, which was implemented in a bid to reduce congestion and improve the flow of traffic on the stretch of road between J11 at Fareham and J4 at Chilworth.

This work took place between February and June this year and was the final phase in the completion of this three-and-a-half-year project.

TJ was awarded the contract by Tarmac and it involved TJ transporting 30,000 tonnes of road planings from the M27 to Tarmac’s depot in Halecombe, near Frome, Somerset.

Here, the planings were recycled and made into the new asphalt which would be relaid on the road as the top surface. TJ then transported the new asphalt to a local hub near Fareham for laying.

All this work took place overnight, enabling TJ’s fleet to be utilised around the clock. Night work is advantageous in this type of project as night time road closures impact fewer people and it also means the journey time between Hampshire and Somerset is greatly reduced as there’s little traffic on the roads.

TJ’s Out of Hours Manager, Kevin Longland said: “The project spanned five months and we deployed 8 or 9 tipper trucks to this project per night for the duration, transporting in excess of 30,000 tonnes of materials in total. The project was completed on time and every aspect went smoothly which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team of drivers.”

TJ has assisted on this £244m project throughout its duration, supplying industry-standard sub base and capping materials and undertaking onsite lorry work and muck away.

We provided haulage services to transport materials from the hub at J11 to wherever they were needed and removed unwanted materials from site, taking them to local facilities for disposal.

In addition to that, we also supplied aggregates from our sand quarry at Hythe and our chalk quarry at Butser for use on the project.

According to Highways England, around 140,000 drivers use the M27 between Southampton and Portsmouth every day.
